These recordings were made by Lady Alison Winter. See Alison's notes about her recordings for more information.
The sheet music the Quire has for this song includes several changes of
time signature. Concerning the timing she used for these recordings,
Alison adds:
I set the metronome to 60 beats per minute, and left it running throughout
(the metronome beat does not get recorded in the music file, though
sometimes I wish I could set it to do so). This tempo served for the
measure in the 3/4 time opening section; as the half note in the 3/2 time
section starting at measure 11 ("questa nostra cazza"); still the half note
in the cut time section beginning at measure 20 ("giorno") and ending with
measure 26 ("spazza spazza spazza"); as the dotted quarter from there
through the 6/8 and 9/8 sections ending with measure 55; and as the quarter
note in the final section. This timing, as far as I can tell, follows the
instructions in the tiny, barely legible specs given at each time
change.
Concerning the holds: I ignored the hold in measure 9 the first time
through, but gave it an extra beat on the repeat. I gave the one in
measure 20 an extra beat. At measure 26 I ignored the hold. At measure 44
I ignored the hold. At measure 55 I gave the hold a full extra beat and
still observed the beat of rest.
